We only have one clue left to solve. No letters, no idea how many letters but the answer is type of footwear. Deadline not until the end of March but we'd like to get it finished. The clue is:

Initially Royal Jester Has Rubella and suffers character inflation.

My friend and I have no ideas so your help would be really appreciated.

Royal Jester could be Jack (in a pack of cards) perhaps leading to jackboot but I can't see how the rest might work.
