Interesting that you should ask as I have been looking into the same thing http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4531544/Can-15-digital-blood-pressure-monitor-REALLY-work.html The £19.99 one at the end of the article seems good
Our Gp told Mr U to get an Omron with upper arm cuff.

Thank you for your suggestions
Don't bother - if his GP thinks his blood pressure should be regularly monitored, the surgery should do it. They're just trying to abdicate their contractual responsibilities.
^But a twenty quid home monitor saves having to schlep down the the surgery
From what I saw on the TV they all come up with different readings where some will show you are ok while others send you scurrying to your GP anyway.
I bought one from Lloyd’s Pharmacy and it seems as good as any.
I also found that the more I used it, the more relaxed I was, and the readings came down.
i would let the GP get on with it, it their role to monitor his blood pressure, and if its too high consistently they can then determine whether he needs any meds.
I have one, it’s fine.
We have an Omron and it seems accurate. When I was being monitored by the GP, he told me to bring it in and compare the results. They were the same as when he used his whatsit.
We have an Omron too. When I go for my B.P. check I take the home readings for the previous week and the nurse checks her machine with ours. Always spot on.
I also have an Omron, bought mine in Boots the chemists. My daughter is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and she thinks it`s fine.
got one from lloyds pharmacy.....does the trick!

We have 3 different ones, I dont trust any of them, they all give different reading and will give a different reading each time I do it, even if they are 5 mins apart.
