My son went over to his girlfriends today, had the message that she had a suspected blood clot on lungs.
Shes been in hospital all day and Ive just had a text off him to say that it has been diagnosed as such and shes been kept in.
1) How serious is this?
2) What will be done?
3) Anyone had a similar experience?
Thanks.

Just to clarify, shes on a shed load of meds for different things. She is 26 and had leaukimia at 14.
It might have started as a DVT in the leg and the clot moving to other parts of the body is the risk with DVT. I wonder if dehydration from the hot weather could be a factor. She will probably be treated with anti-coagulants.

Thank you 237sj, don't know if its appropriate but she is also overweight. Don't know why that is as when she stays at mine she hardly eats, she says its down to her meds. Her handbag looks like a pharmacists wet dream.
If she's inactive and sits a lot, that is a risk factor for DVT
If noty diagnosed it can be fatal, but if diagnosed then the prognosis is good.
50% roughly of pulmonary emboli (clot on the lung) no cause is found.
It has been associated with leukaemia, cancer and cytotoxic chemotherapy, but the increased incidence is small.
She should be fine.

She will be given drugs to stop further clots.....heparin initially and then other blood clotting preventive drugs.

Yes... I have had a blood clot on the lung following a hip replacement.

Thanks again 237, that makes sense.

Cheers Sqad, appreciate it. Will relay info on to my son.
He has been with her all day at the hospital and only just confirmed it.
Question Author
So it probably is associated with her leukaemia even though that was over a decade ago?
Sqad
Should that be //i had a blood clot on the lung ?//
Bazile....LOL...I have no idea what you mean.
Nailit...NO...I didn't say that...you just inferred that.
Lol sqad , I didn't see the 'had'
As you were
Question Author
Sorry Sqad, I didn't infer nothing (not intentionally anyway) Thought that was what you meant. She had leukimia and now she has a blood clot on her lungs. So not related then?
Nailit......the incidence of clots on the lung is slightly increased in patients with leukemia......fact.
That doesn't mean that in a patient who has leukaemia develops a lung blood clot, that the clot is due to the leukaemia.
it might be the case OR it might not.
Question Author
OK. Thanks for clafifying, appreciate it :-)
;-)
if she's on the pill, that can increase the risk
Question Author
Thanks Bednobs, she has a contraceptive implant from what I can gather...
hope she's discharged soon
Question Author
Cheers bednobs, texted my son earlier but not heard back yet?
He's probably out looking for a kebab shop....
