Update On My Friend- He Died Just Before Midnight

Hi there It has been a very long day. Me, my minister and his wife were called to the hospital at 3pm saying that my friends death was imminent. When he got there he was making this horrendous noise, I believe it is called the death rattle. It went on for 6 hours we talked to him a lot and then at 930 the nurse said that it could be the middle of the night so we said goodbye to him and we left I felt a bit guilty but he was on midazolam and morphine and the nurse said he would not know about it. I got home got into my pyjamas the phone rang the hospital had phoned my minister and said it was imminent. So I got dressed again went in and as soon as I did I knew there was a change that death rattle had gone and it was very shallow breathing like 3 times a minute, then he took a deep breath groaned and we waited for the next breath but after 3 minutes it never came so we pressed a buzzer. And the nurse came in and knew straight away that he had died. Exhausted but I was glad I was there at the end.

I was present when my uncle died last year;. It was very clear that the staff were just waiting for him to go, which he did very peacefully. No groaning. He just stopped breathing. Sad.

It's always sad to lose a friend, gordie, but console yourself that he is no longer suffering. I sat by my mother while she died; her breathing was very shallow and her death-rattle came at the very end. A sound i never want to hear again.
