Why do some people wake up with sleep in their eyes. Is this anything to do with the amount of sleep you are getting eg. if you have a good sleep you wont have any in your eyes when you wake up, whereas if you have a bad nights sleep you wake up with sleep in your eye?

Good Q. I havent had any in my eyes for a long time. But I remember one morning when I was about 10, that I had quite a lot of it, and I couldnt open my eye as the sleep had "glued" my eyelashes together....Very weird feeling.

No idea what causes it though

Its snot from your nose. Sometimes if you have a cold it gathers. But when you wake up and there is so much of it that you cant open your eyes, thats conjunctiveyetis.
Although pinkiefriend has hit upon a possible cause, it's not snot...Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the lining of the eylelids... the conjunctiva. This inflammation, caused by virus, an allergy or bacteria, produces a sticky discharge that dries overnight. If severe enough, the dried discharge can, as JackDanielsU experienced, glue the top and bottom lids together. This inflammation, by the way, is sometimes known as pinkeye and can be contagious.
In less pronounced "sleep in the eyes" cases, it's known that some dreams produce emotions that can cause actual tear production. This can also dry and produce grittiness...
