can anyone give me an idea of how much it costs for a person to stay in one of these please? my sister needs care but not nursing she is nearly ninety and after a spell in hospital and rehab does not wish to go home to her council bungalow where she says she did not feel safe (she had several falls) but is worried about the cost as she does not have a great deal of money.

Care homes cost £600 per week on average but if you sister's savings are less than £14,250 the council will pay the fees. (If her savings are between £14,250 and £23,250 she'll have to contribute towards the costs until they drop to the £14,250 threshold). The council can probably take money from your sister's pension(s) towards paying those fees though. (The rules are complex but they must still leave her at least £24.90 per week to meet her personal expenses).

I am aware that my father was placed in a private care home in Seaford Sussex that housed many council placed residents. My mother latterly ended up in a private care home in Sutton Surrey which also housed council placed residents. All the council house residents were part subsidised by their local authorities and those who owned their own property and saved their money carefully subsidised the balance of the other's fees. I would not worry about your mum not having too much money. It will be found from others.
Council house residents fee from the council about £350 per week
My parents individual fee. About £600 per week until their savings went down to £25.000. We didn't find out what happened if it went below that threshold. They both died before the council robbed it all.

Oh and if your mum requires nursing care instead of plain old residential care you will get it all subsidised by the council as my Mum eventually did in the last three weeks of her life. Due to residential care home neglect she ended up in hospital and lost the will to live. The hospital care worker said she wanted to die and was non compliant and advised me she was going to die." We will move her from her residential care home to a residential nursing home and it won't cost you a bean cos we need her bed and it won't cost us much either because she will be dead soon". Aren't we all lucky?
Just for clarification:
Your questions asks about 'council run care homes'. To the best of my knowledge, care homes owned and operated by local coucils haven't existed for several decades. In these days of 'privatisation' and 'outsourcing', councils simply fund places within privately-run care homes.

In my experience if you have a look around and choose one that best meets your requirements/standards it will usually cost nearer the figure ummmm mentioned. I think that the council will only pay up to a certain amount and anything else for a more expensive home will require a top up. I recall Tilly had some experience of this- hopefully she will see the thread
there ARE such things as council run care homes (residential) but they are few and far between - it's mainly privately run care homes. However there is a middle way - my MIL was in a council place and had her own flat in a complex. There were carers on site who came in 4 times a day and available 24 hrs a day via a call button. The criteria was strict for entry as it wa a really popular place. Simply feeling unsafe owuld not qualify you. it seems much more likely to me that if your sister cant pay, they'll give her care in the community instead - carers coming to her house to help her wash, dres, eat etc
