The last two times I have been to the hygeinist it has been really painful. She said this was because I have some receded gums and when she scrapes over the receded bit, it hits the dentine and causes me to jump. She suggested I use a softer brush and use circular movements and don't scrub. Is there anything I can do about this, or are the receded gums like that forever?

I have the same problem. I use an electric toothbrush GENTLY, a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and a mouthwash for sensitive teeth and take ibuprofen before I go. Doing the multifactorial attack has improved things markedly both in terms of pain and in terms of needing less plaque removed. I use Ultradex mouthwash from Amazon...other suppliers may be available but its the only mail order place I can find it.
Once gums have receded, there's no going back.

Try using a sensitivity toothpaste.

You could also do what I do, and not see the hygienist. I think it's an expensive way to clean your teeth. The dentist always complements me on how I look after my teeth despite this.
Electric toothbrush and Corsodyl toothpaste and use dental floss harps right down to the gum. Sorted.

It is the build up of dental plaque that is the main cause of receding gums. Hence the painful "hygiene" treatment that is just grinding or scraping away the plaque. Don't know what caused my hair to recede though. :((
I agree with Wolf. Get an electric tooth brush.
Hi Scarlette. Yes im the same. I pay for 2 scale /polish a year. The best is to rub a good t.paste b4 bed. My hygynist sed. Spit dont rinse. Honest leave the toothpaste to do its job. That goes to all answerbankers too. Look after r pearly whites while we can. Jpt x
If you ask the hygienist, he or she can put some stuff on your gums that should stop you feeling any pain.

Thanks all! Have ordered new softer brush heads, toothpaste and mouthwash. And I will consider not going to the hygienist- it IS an expensive tooth clean.
I also suffered from a safe problem....
I feel you are brushing with your tooth brush at the wrong angle to effectively clean away plaque. use A 45 degree angle pointing towards the top or bottom gum of the teeth. For behind the front top and bottom two, have the tooth brush at a 90 degree angle

This photo will show what i mean.

Simply just brushing your teeth is quite pointless. It's critical to brush correctly.
