Teen Smow has always suffered from ear wax and has has his ears syringed several times. His ears are blocked right now and he has been trying his doctors every day for a week to get them syringed but they keep saying no appointments and call back tomorrow. Trouble is he is flying on holiday on 29th April and really doesn’t want to go away like this.. he’s bough drops to use at home and has used the whole course but they haven’t worked either. Any bright ideas?? His hearing is really affected at the moment. TIA.

Are any of these clinics nearby? Costly option but maybe better than nit being able to hear over Easter.

My doctors refuses to do this procedure anymore so I bought a kit off Amazon and I do it myself. I use warm olive oil for a couple of days before and then use the syringe in the kit and it comes out nice and easily. No more trips to the doctors required. Might be worth giving it a try.
Had mine done a few months ago. First appointment was advised to use olive oil or Otex to soften wax first. 2nd appointment Surgery nurse did it.
It's a scandal that GP's refuse to syringe ears and an even bigger scandal that some GP's charge.
What are GP's there for?
My bet is that the vast majority of GP's do not know HOW to syringe ears.
BagPuss at 09.02 has the right idea.
I do my son's ears with a syringe that I got from Amazon. Works a treat.
we will be doing our own appendectomies soon !,!
You never know, Anne, you never know.

Morning guys. Ok he has pleaded with doctors surgery again today and they still say no appointments. He isn’t anywhere near a Specsavers, but he has tried the ear clinic postcode thing and found a couple within 20 mins. He has spoken to them and they can fit him in - at a cost! £25 per ear! But doesn’t look like he has much choice. :(
Cheaper than those I've come across.

I guess when the NHS abandons quality of life care it opens up an opportunity for others to profit more than necessary.
It's still wise to break down the wax before going, ( Otex Express) as always worked for me verywell. Can be bought from most supermarkets /chemist.

Yes he’s been using drops and olive oil for about a week now....
Just get a DIY kit. They sell them on Amazon but also in Boots I think. Easy to use and cost pennies.

Think he’s a bit worried about making it worse
I don't think he would make it worse. Use warm olive oil for 2/3 days before doing the self-syringe. This will make the wax very soft and easier to remove. I've used my self-syringe kit for a number of years now, and it really does work. Use warm water when syringeing. I promise he will be amazed at the difference when he's done it.
The Otex pack in Hopkirks' link is identical to the kit I use, and I've never had a problem, although I don't rate the Otex drops. Olive oil is much more effective.

Ok teen Smow paid to have his ears syringed this morning. Left ear is fine now. Right ear still muffled. Guy who did it says that all of the wax has completely gone in both ears, but that he has fluid behind the eardrum in his right ear, and it’s not that easy to clear. What do most people do who have this??
He needs to see a doctor - could be glue ear or an infection.
Question Author
Ah ok right.
If he had an ear infection, the ear drum would have been inflamed. Unusual to get fluid the other side of the ear drum without a preceding bug. Does he suffer from hay fever?
