Ok, I hate posting questions like this but here goes. I’ve had perfectly normal periods up until this month. This one started as usual, but is still going on 3 weeks later with no signs of stopping! And it’s much heavier than usual.
Now I gather that women can start the first signs of the menopause as early as their early forties, but I thought that periods were meant to slow down, not get heavier. I’ve looked online but am just getting all different info.
I don’t want to bother my doctor unnecessarily, but is this something to worry about or not?

During menopause periods go a bit wild. They eventually slow down and stop, but before they do sometimes it's like they can have their last fight.

Many women have to get a contraceptive pill to help ease their periods because during menopause the flow can be so extreme they need some assistance to get it to stop.

I would see your doctor. It would be good for him to assess your stage.
Mine went very heavy Smow as the first sign of my menopause.

Ahhh ok, I don’t have any other symptoms so wouldn’t have even said I was starting the menopause but if what you’re saying is true then maybe I am.....
We are dealing with one episode of excessive bleeding (menorrhagia)and as such can only give advice on that basis.
Providing that you feel well and not dizzy (anaemia), then at this stage it is no big deal.
menopause is unlikely, ectopic pregnancy is unlikely BUT hormonal may well be a likely cause (emotional)
See this period out and then monitor your periods for the next 2-3 months.
Should have added - and lasted longer than usual. I went onto HRT in the end and felt 20 years younger;-)
Smow. Might your recent emotional life be contributing to a change in menstruation ( hormones ) . .?

Thankyou Sqad, and everyone else. Recent events - I honestly don’t know if they would contribute. I have no tummy pains, cramps, nothing, just this heavy bleeding, including lots of clots. I will wait to see if and when this one ends.......
Where did you get that info, Spath, you're stating it as if it's a fact!!

I agree with Sqad.
You're implying it's not factual.

Of course i should have used the words "Sometimes" and "could" more. As everyone's experience is unique and subjective.
It's not factual if it only happens to a percentage of women so yes, chose your words better, and having a dodgy period is not unusual.

I think if it’s still going on in another week (i.e. it will have been a month) then I’ll have a word with my doctor.....
Maybe it's best you don't respond to my posts if you feel they're objectionable

Smow can take or leave my words for what they are.
How old are you, Smow?
Maybe it's best you think before you post, Spath.
Lets not start a petty squabble on a serious body & soul thread. I was trying to help smow with some info, implying she should not worry, and that she should see her GP. I don't think that's unreasonable in the slightest.

Tilly I’m, ahem, 50. But have absolutely no menopause symptoms whatsoever.
Smow, i wouldn't wait another week to see a doc. I'd go now if i was you. Do as you wish though of course.
I had this very suddenly in my late thirties. No sooner did one period end then another one started and in the end it was like one continual period with a week between them. Turned out I had fibroids.
Monitor for a while then go to the doctors. If it is something like that you can have a D&C to get rid of them .Mine kept growing though and I ended up having a hysterectomy.
Hopefully though it isn't anything like that and it's the start of the menopause.Don't worry.

My doctors is actually opposite my house - I’ll pop over later and have a word x
If/when you pop over smow, will you actually be seen by a gp. .?
