I've just been reading an article about foods you should avoid if you have Hypothyroidism . They include things like Broc, cauli, sprouts, Gluten,fatty foods,sugary foods, processed foods, excess fibre, coffee and alcohol.It said that these foods can inhibit your body's ability to absorb the medication you take.Is there any truth in this, and if you are supposed to avoid these foods, what foods can you eat? There doesn't seem to be much left!
Barsel....there will be presented to you i this thread websites that will give you a list of foods which "may" inhibit the absorption of your thyroxine medication.
my advice to you is to eat what you want to eat and take your thyroid replacement at the same time everyday, on an empty stomach and regulate your thyroid gland under activity by twice yearly blood tests.
You will live a normal life and not go far wrong.
I've had an underactive thyroid for years, as did my mother. I've never been told to avoid certain foods , have an annual blood test and no change has ever been detected. I only take 75mcgs, first thing in the morning as I get up.
I have had hypothyroidism for many years. I take my pill daily in the morning 1 hour before food and have a yearly blood test. I eat exactly what I want ( love greens), don't drink and I have been completely stable for years. I would only worry about absorption, if my blood tests indicated a problem.

It varies as to what you have had to eat.....stomach is almost empty after 4 hours following a heavy meal.......lighter meals or snack, probably 2 hours.
Fluids are not considered a "food" in this context and in my opinion.

The reason I was asking is because at the moment I have most of the symptoms even though I take 125 mcgs a day.
In recent months my health has not been too good. GP has diagnosed chest infection and then hypertension. There is no sugar or blood in my urine, but I still feel like a wet lettuce. I've booked myself for a blood test on November 8th to check my thyroid but wondered what I can do to help myself in the meantime, so was looking at my diet to see if I could improve it. I need some energy.
ummmm I do have a terrible diet, and this is mainly because the kitchen is my least favourite place to be. I want to be in and out of there as fast as I can. It's just coming up to 3.15pm and all I've had today is a cup of coffee. Do you think if I had regular healthy meals it might make a difference?

Barsel - yes. When I was in hospital they put a lot of emphasis on food. Not just what you eat (I only ever ate desserts when I was there) but the frequency. Plus water and good sleep.
I have a pretty healthy diet but when they were telling me what foods to avoid and was sitting there daring them to say 'carbs' I have changed the frequency though and try not to skip meals. You'd be surprised the small amounts you can eat and they consider it an adequate meal.
Lots to think about. I actually gave some dietary advice to someone on here a while ago, I need to practice what I preach. My advice was to make a list of healthy foods that you actually like and choose from those. I'm off to do that now.

Take your thyroxine about 30 mins to an hour before you eat or have beverages , Ideally first thing in the morning or last thing at night, If you take supplements or Iron containing foods wait a couple of hours before you take them as there as Iron affects absorption, I eat all of the above foods and my blood tests remain stable.
Seemingly, there are quite a lot of us who have this condition.
I have never been given any advice on what foods to avoid but I know not to have anything to eat or drink when I've had my Levothyroxine. I take it with water, obviously, and then have a couple of cups of hot water before moving on to tea about an hour later.
I take 75mcgs each morning with a good sized glass of water but don't eat for at least an hour afterwards. Labels on mine just says take half an hour before food. No mention of liquids but will just take them with a sip of water from now on. Thanks all for info.
