Add to this their generous exes (which sees them reimbursed for anything from rent or mortgage on an agreeable property down to a bath plug and a packet of crisps), a few bob thrown in for family members to act as their staff and they'd still be well off.

That may be the issue. Apply some logic to it.
If you pay an MP double the salary, then it will attract people who want the job just for the money and not because they're skilled or have a passion for the work. That's the situation we're currently in.
More money wouldn't equal better MPs.
