Ken, we could set up something like those war graves cemeteries, with a big monument saying "In memory of those who gave their lives for the economy".

Gromit, don't. You'll only rattle 10CS' chains.
No.
its got to come at some point, why not now..

// why not now... //

Because too many people are still dying.
that may be the case in another month or two,
they have to start getting people back to work for one thing. shops really need to open up as if they don't many are going to go to the wall.
and the government can't keep on bailing out the populace at large.

Emmie,
That’s a bit like saying we have to let 2 Boeing 737s crash everyday to save the aviation industry.
It's a balancing act. Covid/economy/public purse. We still aren't in a position to vaccinate, so folk will continue to be at risk. And folks will die if we don't get back to normal too. Easing gently, with the option to rein back if it becomes overwhelming, is the only rational option.
I believe we are coming out of lockdown too early.
But of course if we had gone into lockdown earlier then we wouldn't be in the situation we have today.
no gromit it isn't. when do you propose to ease lockdown then, i have a friend who is going back to work, though mostly from home still, and her son is going back to school, come Monday its got to come sometime, and as i said why not now. Yes its appalling that people are still dying and for that fact i feel sad and sorry, but this country has got to get moving again...
Saving the aviation industry is somewhat different than saving the whole economy and our public funding. We aren't all lost if the aviation industry goes under.

Lockdown is killing people? Shops have to open to save lives?
sorry there is no arguing with you....and i have other things to worry myself about....
sorry to quit, but my back is hurting too much to hunch over a keyboard, will revisit later on if possible.
Possibly, but I don't know what the alternative is and yes as emmie says, many businesses WILL go to the wall if it carries on for much longer.
If we don’t make progress now, everyone’s immune system will be zilch !
Difficult call. I wanted to delay things by a couple of weeks but I can see both sides.
One thing to bear in mind is that yesterdays death figures would have included a fair number of deaths from 1-2 weeks ago so reflect infections that probably occurred in April.
But I felt the graphs yesterday were showing infections/ hospital admissions picking up ever so slightly in many areas outside London.
I feel many people have been bending the rules for a couple of weeks anyway- house/garden parties, walking in larger groups, visiting friends and staying over, so maybe this uptick reflects that rather than this latest relaxation. But I think even if Boris, Nicola and the Welsh gov had said 'no change' people would have continued to relax.
We needed to start the economy so we can afford to pay teachers, nurses, council workers, doctors, carers and phase out these furlough payments. Maybe it should have been relaxed a little more slowly but we couldn't leave it much longer.
As for schools, maybe mid June would have been better but certainly they have to reopen and try it out so we can learn and plan for September .
At what level of deaths or infections would you have started to relax Gromit?

Anyone for 'Russian Roulette'?
Good answer by fiction -factory and I empathise with gromit.

At the back of mind and that of many others is the effect of a second spike, which will be more destructive to the economy and more lives will definitely be lost.

Is there evidence of a second spike? Probably not yet, but the thought lingers uncomfortably in the mind.

Health or the economy?

I am glad that I do not have to decide, it in my opinion the lockdown has been released to soon and a second spike is inevitable, but if we have to sacrifice a few more old trouts for the sake of the economy then so be it. Someone has to make that call.
It's not always 'old trouts' that die is it though sqad?
