Could it be that a lot of folk use social media like a platform to display how prestigious they believe they are. If you like a kind of showing off to total strangers. A few good examples would be someone states that they live in a village, giving the impression of being one of the select. or very posh, then you have ones who tell you of their expensive holiday plans, and in some cases indicate how many thousands of pounds its going to cost, along with all the material products they are buying and don't really need, I just don't get the need to do this? Then you have others that brag about their family members, making out they have high profile jobs, and such like. Why do they do this? Are they just looking for admiration and continual praise to boost their ego/ self esteem. Do they have to do it on social media because they can no longer impress people they no longer have personal contact with, or those contacts have got bored with their bragging. Just seems very strange to me. What your thoughts. Or could they just be making it all up?

Yes indeed - and not just Social Media in general.

There are (demonstrably) false 'lifestyles' being touted around on here - not quite the 'fat truck driver from Hull posing as the lady who lunches in Surrey" - but not that far removed.

People can be very careless in terms of the odd bits of truth that they drop into their fabricated personae - and a determined fact-checker can find some quite illuminating inconsistencies ...

@12.37 HA HA that's funny you should post that because its not long ago someone was bragging to me they were driving an Audi that had cost around £18.000, no sooner they had told me that they made a point of asking me what I had, well lets just say no were near price, or car. Cut a long story short I saw the same person 2 weeks ago but not taking the hiss this time, openly told me that payments of £300 a month was a no go. But this is really about the bragging on internet sites, making out they have this great life.

Of course there are storytellers and also many who are telling the truth, when one's been a member for a long time it's natural to give people an idea of their lives. You personally are a bit odd to raise this, I thought for ages you were a scared little old lady who needed reassurance when you're nothing of the sort, I'm totally convinced you are male too - so why aren't you more open and honest?

I don't think so, really. "Bragging" assumes it is something to be proud of, which it hardly ever is... and I think a lot of people come over more as insecure, than "tough" or "straight-talking" like they seem to believe.
But it's probably worth taking everything online with a pinch of salt. At least.

The anonymity of the keyboard brings out all sorts of strangeness in people.
sunny-dave is correct; anyone paying attention to what is written can spot glaring inconsistences with ease. However, commenting on these will evince accusations of one being 'sad' or having 'stalker-like' tendencies rather than the guilty party holding their hands up and admitting that 'it's a fair cop'.

I suppose grandstanding and truth-embroidering will continue as long as Social Media continues.........and so will the head-shaking amusement of those more observant of the written word.
