Tiny flies around my windows

In the last month or so, tiny flies, the size of gnats, have been congregating around my windows. I thought at first this was something to do with one of my houseplants, that perhaps it had developed a disease of some sort. The windows, although new, are not particularly well insulated and each morning I have to wipe them, an act which generally kills 10 flies per window. What are these little flies and why are they in my flat? More importantly, how do I get rid of them?

oh wow, i am so glad you have asked this, i keep meaning to ask the same thing as i have them, but only round my sink (which is under a window)

Ours seem to have gone, which may or may not be the result of us putting the plant we had on the windowsill outside instead.

to me they sound like fruit flies, I sometimes get them around my brown recycling kitchen waste bin. I have however noticed something similar around houseplants if I have overwatered them. Here is a link to a site which tells more about them. http://www.the-piedpiper.co.uk/th6h.htm
Sounds like compost flies to me, you can buy house plant insecisides that should combat your problem. good luck....
Before you go out, spray a little fly spray over your plants (not too much) and around the room, it smells foul but seems to do the trick. Try not to breathe !! Also spray in your bin.
