Most people strive for a happy life, it's the ultimate goal if you will. However through one reason or another happiness isn't always a given.

Has anyone ever took the decision to just embrace sadness when it arrives and let it stay until such time as it decides to leave?

Time is a healer, a cliche but true, but there will always be days when a reminder hits you. If it went on for weeks or months, that's different, it if lasts a few hours or day, accept it, embrace it, have a good cry, get it out of your system.
I don't agree you should embrace sadness but maybe something is lost in translation. To me Embracing something means welcoming it -I really don't welcome the overwhelming feeling of sadness and anger when I think of my first husband's death then the death of my father, but you can have a good cry without welcoming those emotions, just accept it , deal with it then remember with affection the times you spent with them.
Does it not depend on the cause of the sadness really?

If you embrace all other emotions - love, happiness, excitement, then sadness and grief also deserve a place.

Much better to reflect on your feelings as part of the healing process and let it takes its time to mend. People who don't do that and just 'pretend' to brush themselves down and carry on with a 'brave face' tend to hold on to bitterness and resentment for longer.

This appears quite evident on AB.

The negative emotions need to be accepted, not embraced. Accepting something does not mean you brush it under the carpet and show a brave face.
Embrace in my lingo means to accept willingly. Let us not cavil too much, I'm sure we mean the same thing ultimately.
I understand your point, Polly, maybe embrace is the wrong word. I think it's healthy to allow yourself to be sad. Anniversaries, birthdays etc. you can't help but think and reflect. Remembering happy times as well as sad times. As long as it doesn't last too long; as long as you can still laugh.
Sometimes, you have no choice but to accept, however devastating it is. And it takes a lot of time.
Theland, I understand what you mean, but the advice would be completely different for an illness. You should ignore everything said here, as it isn't relevant for you x
Trever the pug "Embrace in my lingo means to accept willingly. Let us not cavil too much, I'm sure we mean the same thing ultimately"

No I will never accept it willingly
"Embrace" does sound as though it is welcome. Tolerate, accept, bear... might be better.
A lot of artists and musicians embrace their sadness. It is quite a conduit to creativity.
