Is Pornography Harmful
59 Answers
Just made a passing refference to a thread in News about gay actors and thought about a passing conversation at work re: porn.
Anyone think that pornography is harmful?
Anyone think that pornography could actually be beneficial?
As a male (because I think that there may be a divide amongst the sexes on this topic)
I have watched loads of porn in life, both alone and with sexual partners.
At my age (54) its now an occassional diversion...take it or leave it... but when I was younger
it may have played a bigger part.
Some arguements against it are that viewers go on to commit rape, child abuse, see women as just sex objects etc.
Thats not my experience. Ive never wanted to rape a woman, abuse a child or just view a woman as a discardable pleasure just because I bought a 'Hustler' at 14 or viewed Pornhub vids recently.

Oh I dont know!
Certainly the plumber (with the big hairy 1970's moustache) calling to fix your washing machine and instead servicing you wasnt realistic, but other scenarios could be accommodated for ;-)

nailit when you ask is it harmful, do you mean physically or mentally?
As an example, if a young men was watching porn all day, he might just feel a sexual urge to go out and rape an innocent person, male or female.
Obviously not everyone will do that, but some might. If consenting adults feel a bit of porn might spice up their sex life, as Bobbs has said,
//What you do and with who in the confines of your home has nothing to do with anyone //
To answer your question. yes it can be harmful if used on someone against their will, but not if it's used by people who feel they need it to pep up their sex lives.

Either
I grew up (born in 1966) with literally thousands of other kids born in the same year, exposed to the the same amount of pornography...mags, vids, internet...as others, but no devient behaviour as far as I am aware.
Im pretty sure that Jack the Ripper didnt have an access to anywhere near the amount of 'Smut' that we are used to before commiting his crimes

My opinion....porn is not a major player in foreplay for the female.
Porn , massage parlours are all important factors in male maturity, an era that most if not all males traverse into manhood.
Porn does not implant or incite abnormal or illegal confrontations with the opposite sex.
All of my 4sons have been indoctrinated into this philosophy with no deviations that I know of.

Short-term, I don't think so, and I don't have objections to it. Neither do I believe that most people would watch pork and go out to commit a crime, that they usually wouldn't.
However- in the long run, over many generations and hundreds of years, I suspect it is harmful. Both to men and women. To be fed the idea from birth, of women being sex objects, whether it's porn, adverts, page 3, films, music.... etc etc... can't really be helpful for anyone. And when you look at the sheer number of sexual crimes committed, particularly by men- i can't help wondering at least, that the all pervasive "women exist for your pleasure"... must have some effect overall.
