Dirty Water

For years we have had dirty water. The water is clear but taps get blocked by a spongy black substance & the toilet gets black streaks after 2 or 3 flushes. We are in a hard water area. I have written to Severn Trent several times about this with no effective solution - they have stopped replying to my letters. Does anyone else experience this or could it be a purely local problem?

I have threatened to stop paying if they will not sort it out.

Are all your taps affected or just the ones not directly connected to the mains.
It is only a bit of bacteria that won't harm you.
The black slime that accumulates on taps and in cisterns is bacteria that feed on oxidized iron and manganese in the water.
It isn't a nationwide thing, its regional.

We have it too. I clear it with white vinegar; someone said it was because of the very hard water.

I have a combi boiler so all the water comes from the mains. Toilet, sink & washbasin affected. Doesn't seem to get up to the shower head.

Surely if the water is chlorinated there shouldn't be bacteria in it?

The "Report a problem" link on their website just brings up a blank page. B'stards!
bacteria are everywhere - I seem to carry Serratia in my mouf and guts - and my cleaner said - christ it looks as tho you have butchered someone in your shower.
( pink red glow - hey my bathroom should be used for crime progs like psycho)
From a suppliers' point of view...they will need to know if this is purely a problem in your property or one which is affecting many people. Can you ask neighbours/ friends in the locale if they have the same problem?
If lots of you are affected, your supplier is legally obliged to investigate by sending an inspector to take samples etc. If it's only your property affected, they are unlikely to help.

Bookbinder - what happens if you click on "Report a problem now"?

I just get a blank page with no means of entering any text.
davebro, if you have got a pop up blocker on then turn it off, also your ad blocker then reload the page. I find the safari system occasionally blocks similar pop up forms on some sites. You might also try using a different browser.
