Like a lot of people I’ve put quite a bit weight on over the last year, probably heavier now than I’ve ever been, this morning after my shower I decided to take my BP and after taking it 3 times to get a average reading, it was 163/80 , I’ve rank my surgery and was told I’d get a call back sometime during the day which is the way it is just now, at 74, 75 come November , I’ve never taken any meds for anything and have considered this to be very lucky for me but I must admit , this has given me a wake up call, I’ve got no symptoms like dizziness etc

What prompted you to take your BP, Bobbi.
Question Author
It was really a case of never seeing a doctor for anything and my increase in weight Ken, just thought I’d check my BP, In the past I’ve been for an annual overhaul but not since Covid hit us
I would imagine quite a few of us have gained that bit extra baggage, Bobbi, and it stands to reason that our BP will rise accordingly. You've done the correct thing in contacting the docs.
a one off BP reading is completely useless.
I will make a guess that your GP may ask you to check it more regularly before doing anything
Question Author
Thank you , I appreciate it Ken
I'd try it again later after relaxing a bit. The 80 is quite normal and the 163 may just be higher because you were warm and heart rate raised from taking a shower.
Take your BP over a couple of days maybe morning, noon and evening. Just once each time as repeated takings can see BP increase. Don't worry too much. Increase your exercise. Decrease sugar intake and limit booze to one glass day

I hope so Bednobs
maybe the first reading you were like woahhh which made your blood pressure rise its a bit ironic how for some people taking a blood pressure reading can send their blood pressure up
No big deal.
GP Will ask you to take your BP three times a day for a week and record the readings,
If all settles then that will be the end ofthe story, but ifthe"top" number remains highish, the he may put you on a small dose of BP lowering tablets.
No bigdeal.

Thanks all, I’ll wait to see what they say when they ring me, I am aware the lower reading isn’t cause for concern
calmck gives good advice.

I only have a drink at home on a weekend , probably 3 high ball vodkas and caffeine free cokes over the three nights
Think you have hit the nail on the head , too much Mother Goose.

haha, If only LB
Bobbs, make sure you are seated and nice and relaxed before you take your BP. When I have mine checked at the doctors, I walk down the long corridor and as soon as I sit down they say right, lets take your BP and it's always high. Taking it at home, I wait until I've been seated for at least half an hour and it's always fine.
Let us know what the GP tells you. x
Question Author
yes Barsel, I think coming out of the shower probably wasn't the best reading I would get , I will do the best of three later and write them down , I will do this like sqad suggested, on a 7 day run
Same here Barsel. I would be chatting and laughing with the nurse as she took my BP. Then I read about quietly relaxing for a few minutes beforehand. What a massive difference.
