Notice Period - Again!

Breaking contract - leaving before notice period.
As many of you know we’ve handed in our notice (I say “our” as Husb n I are in a joint
role)
Our contract stated 3 months notice on either side and we requested to leave early (a 2 month notice).
The employer is refusing - tho they have not responded to us (verbal or written). the refusal has come via another source ( I saw it in writing myself - don’t ask how I’d rather not divulge lol). They have not even acknowledged our Resignation email
I’m tempted to just walk after the 2 months is up. We have another role to go to which wants us ASAP- …

I just don’t understand it esp as there is now someone who will fill in for the most important aspects of our role.
I can only think it’s stubbornness…. But we’ve always got on well with employer, Gone the extra mile etc etc etc

Still the above quandary going on - I hate conflict - and these sort of things worry me (incessantly) Im becoming quite anxious tbh!
So to date no response re our request to leave before official notice period.
Its been 5 weeks since we verbally resigned, 2 weeks since we backed this up in writing and tonight I plan (??!!!) to send an email saying that as we have not hear we WILL be leaving XYZ date (we have accepted another job )
A synopsis:
our notice period is 3 months (in our contract)
we requested 2 months
We have had no response whatsoever
HOWEVER ... I saw an email (not addressed to me so I can't let slip!!!) wherein employer sent their lawyer (I kid you not!) an email saying "I'm mindful to refuse their request". (in other words a no).
Lawyer responded saying that they can't stop us leaving early but they can threaten us with a poor ref (PS up until resignation we had had nothing but good praise from employer!). Its left a bad taste in my mouth tbh because we've always got on well - even though we rarely saw employers due to their lifestyle / various homes elsewhere etc
PS there is someone ready to step into the most important part of our role with immediate effect and I've done handover sheets etc etc etc
I can only think that the employer does not like to be told what to do?
