Obviously want to buy my first Grandchild a present (Yes, I know a newborn cant appreciate a gift but its my first Grandchild....)

What did you buy your first grandchild, if anything?

Already treated MYSELF to a pipe, slippers and a packet of humbugs.
premium bonds?
you buy a lovely soft toy for her and also open a bank account with £x on it, a figure that you are comfortable adding to on special occasions or whenever.....an investment for the future!
Congrats by the way......and don't make the toy too big....
Check what they have already.

Perhaps a really nice musical mobile to go over the cot, but you don't want to double up.
My mate had his first child, a son.

He immediately bought him a large Scalextric set.

Of course, he had to test it out.
I bought a piece of jewellery for my granddaughter, parents to keep until she was older. She will be 16 at the end of Sept. and will then have complete custody of it. She's been looking forward to wearing it for years!

In France, I knew one family which gave a bit of land and each member planted a chestnut tree - worth a fortune in wood when the child made 21 years. Most of us can't do that. Someone else I know invested in a really good case of wine in the infant's name.

I got my beloved 'Old Teddy', who is still with me and is now pretty old and retired from cuddling/crying duties. If no-one else is buying this, that's what I'd go for - a good-quality bear-for-life.
I gave money for the first, as I didn't know what to buy. I thought parents could get something, maybe an item they hadn't got.
With the other two, I bought soft toys, shaws & clothes.
I think DTC's suggestion is a good idea.
Often done with port in a vintage year over here, jourdain - but with risk! I was give a case of 1955 Warre for my 21st by a pseudo-godfather. I kept it in the family home as they had the ideal pantry/cellar at 6-7 degrees C.....and with my travelling....

The old contracted bowel cancer and I found the old 'b' had drunk his way through the case....I just hoped that he didn't mix it with brandy which was his late-on want..... around £4000 at current valuation for well-kept product - and not in a wooden box underground!

Will probably go with the premium bonds/ bank account idea but a scaletrix for my Grandaughter seems like so much more fun ;-)
sorry, ' the old man contracted'.....
We bought ours a gold sovereign which is added to on each subsequent birthday
The eldest is 15 and I think it will come in handy with University fees if that's what she decides to to do
Buy it casper the jellycat they are suitable for the new born
A piece of my precious jewellery.
Buy a scrap book. Put a photo of you holding your newborn grandchild on the first page and add a few words on how you feel. Add to this on their birthdays to be given to them when they are 16. Memories are much more important than gifts of money.
nailit, delighted for you to have something as brilliant as this to focus on x
Congratulations. I opened a Barclays child account and arranged a monthly payment. Also a Tooth Fairy, first curl set. See Not on the High Street. Lots of different ones.
I'd just like to add my congratulations, nailit. I simply didn't believe how much change in me my granddaughter wrought.
a piece of silver - I got a silver snuff box and my relations get silver at auction ( more silver for your buck)

I kept it in the family home - oh dear, a lesson learnt. a stamp collection 'stolen by thieves' - a garage with my grandfathers things emptied ('rubbish', onjaaaayx later found on ebay,) lecture notes thrown away, soft toys burnt - no stieff - trunks broken into, and emptied, rooms broken into and looted ( Khartoum so that doesnt count) - and that is only in the Pedant family (not one person, whole family at it) - oh the motor bike

I bear no grudges
