Im about to become a granddad for the first time in a few weeks (October 1st is the given date)
Obviously want to buy my first Grandchild a present (Yes, I know a newborn cant appreciate a gift but its my first Grandchild....)
What did you buy your first grandchild, if anything?
After all, it will be her 'birthday' ;-)
Thanks.

In France, I knew one family which gave a bit of land and each member planted a chestnut tree - worth a fortune in wood when the child made 21 years. Most of us can't do that. Someone else I know invested in a really good case of wine in the infant's name.
I got my beloved 'Old Teddy', who is still with me and is now pretty old and retired from cuddling/crying duties. If no-one else is buying this, that's what I'd go for - a good-quality bear-for-life.

Often done with port in a vintage year over here, jourdain - but with risk! I was give a case of 1955 Warre for my 21st by a pseudo-godfather. I kept it in the family home as they had the ideal pantry/cellar at 6-7 degrees C.....and with my travelling....
The old contracted bowel cancer and I found the old 'b' had drunk his way through the case....I just hoped that he didn't mix it with brandy which was his late-on want..... around £4000 at current valuation for well-kept product - and not in a wooden box underground!

a piece of silver - I got a silver snuff box and my relations get silver at auction ( more silver for your buck)
I kept it in the family home - oh dear, a lesson learnt. a stamp collection 'stolen by thieves' - a garage with my grandfathers things emptied ('rubbish', onjaaaayx later found on ebay,) lecture notes thrown away, soft toys burnt - no stieff - trunks broken into, and emptied, rooms broken into and looted ( Khartoum so that doesnt count) - and that is only in the Pedant family (not one person, whole family at it) - oh the motor bike
I bear no grudges
