My son is 13 and has special needs. He attends mainstream school with an ECHP.
Now he has been going to school but refusing to go into his lessons as his anxiety levels are high.
They are now telling me it’s truancy and keeping him in same day detention.

If a child misbehaves I fully support that but as far as I can see he is in school he has supported hours shouldn’t staff be supporting him to getting into his lessons?
Or am I wrong .
We are due to go out later as I am a leader of a youth group and we need our son home as we can’t leave him home alone so he comes with us.
Surely for detention they need to give us notice

//A school must give at least 24 hours' written notice of a detention to the parent, so allowing time for the parent to raise any problems.//
there wil;l be a noegotiation over today's detention.
Is this the first time you have heard of his misbehaviour?
According to the DofE, schools do not have to give notice of a detention or why the detention has been given. You should ask to see the school’s behaviour policy.

You are setting a bad precedent by taking your son out of school early (I understand you can’t leave him home alone). School is a commitment and you know what time the day ends and should plan your commitments around this.
This might be only in England but this link states neither notice nor reason need be given.

Where di you get that Danny?
the gov uk site says
Schools don’t have to give parents notice of after-school detentions or tell them why a detention has been given.

I would talk to the school, don't make it a war, you must both come together and discuss a compromise with your son present that pleases all. The goal is to get him studying and on track again.
Ignore my post at 13.15
To be fair to DANNY, a few sites say that but it must apply only in some schools or Authority areas.

I am not taking my son out of school early I need him home usual time so we can go to group that I run.
My son does not have ability to be left alone due to his needs so he needs to come with me and my household to our group at 4 . He may have detention but I’m paid to run a group so need to be out and with my son
The school should not be punishing a child who is on an EHCP. The plan should be making provision for him to be supported. What does the plan say about this? What school support is being offered to him?
Question Author
Tilly I don’t feel they are supporting him. He is in school he has kidney and bowel issues he has a rare syndrome plus anxiety he has a one to one and she or he should be supporting him to lessons and encouragement to stay.
He will be upset at having to stay behind he is not a naughty boy just clearly upset at being at back at school
Question Author
He is teased and bullied and has no friends. He shouldn’t be at mainstream he should be in a school where he can learn life skills.
All I get is he is doing well and then you get the end of year report where it’s at a achievement level of 2 .
They think I’m stupid I know the system my daughters just achieved 3 A levels from the same school .
Just makes me cross I’m a support worker for adults with LD so I’m used to there ways and support them according which school are clearly not
how do you know they are not supporting and encouraging him to go to lessons? What do you suggest they do - drag him there and sit on him so he doesn't leave?
Question Author
I’m asking for sensible advice please.
my mostest sensible advice is communicate with them - are you doing so already? I presume you are if you know they are not supporting him to get to and stay in class? do you have any ideas you could discuss with them about what you think the most appropriate way forward is?
Set up a meeting to discuss it with them if you are not happy with the way he is being supported
Question Author
Thanks I’m trying to deal with the situation.

Yes we do communicate but there are over 3,000 children in his secondary school so they are busy.
Senco head of year and his one to one all dealing with the situation.
They allowed him home and a meeting has been arranged next week.
What does special educational needs actually mean? If hes being bullied that might be why he doesn't want to go to school.
Question Author
Yes he is being bullied verbally and emotionally.
That is why he is afraid to go in to class.
