The six words above can be found 'about 374 times' on the internet, said about the Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool. The words are almost always in inverted commas, as though they are a quotation from somebody or some organisation. I like this statement, even though it is purely subjective. I hate wishy-washy statements (especially when they are objective) that something is "one of the most ..." whatever. It's so lazy. Here's an example: I am one of the cleverest men in England, i.e. I fall somewhere in a list of about 34 million men. I'd like to think I am in the upper 17 million as I passed the 11+. I'd like to find where the statement about the Philharmonic Dining Rooms was first made, and by whom. Can it be done? Can Google put the results in date order? I realise that the statement might have been first made before the internet started, but if I can find when it was first recorded on the internet, that would be a good place to start.

By tweaking the custom date range settings in Google, it seems that there are no references shown before 1 April 2010, when Nicholson's Pubs used that description on their own website.

However it has to be remembered that Google only shows web pages that are still online. The pub might have been described that way previously but on one or more web pages that no longer exist.

It's a great pub, fantastic building and the Men's toilet need to be seen to be believed. Ladies are allowed in by special arrangements.

Sadly the ale doesn't match up to the surroundings, despite it being very busy when Dave and I went as he wanted to show me the beer was poor at best and we tried most of them . Walked down to the Dispensary, tatty as he'll but great beer. Nicholsons do terrible things to great pubs.

Anyone who likes really beautiful pub interiors would enjoy the Bartons Arms in Birmingham. Beautiful ceramic tile work (and a brilliant Thai restaurant as well)

Bert, the only answer is to visit all the pubs in England and rate them yourself. Dirty job but someone has to do it!

i dont know the answer but i also quite hate "one of the most....."
they say "one of the most expensive...." about Whatever county they are in when searching on location location location. It's utterly meaningless

Around 1990 we were employed by Bass as QS to work alongside one of their In-house architects to come up with a scheme to refurbish The Philharmonic. After a site visit the only things we could come up with was to decorate the Dining Room side and recover the loose furniture - anything else would have been criminal! Fortunately Bass agreed.

The same thing happened to us when asked to look at The Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast. Same result thank goodness.

Rowan, at this time it was still owned by Bass and I must say their draught Bass was excellent. (agree with you though about Nicholsons).

the source doesn't have to be a written one, so it's quite possibly something the owner's mum told him but never put on the internet.

By and large, though, it does have a meaning, though a very imprecise one. People on this thread who've seen it agree that it is ornate, whereas a great many pubs are not. For instance, this one's okay but you'd never call it ornate
