They do, but I believe if a child is deemed Gillick competent then their wishes will override that of the parent.
Racky's answer is good.
yes and yes -OK
no and no - then it isnt given

parents no and child yes - gillick competent (*) child gets it

parents yes and child no - can be chained down and given it BUT - I cant recollect a child of this age being chained up or gagged, you just say "fine - sort of get and die....."

I am not in charge of children in any way
(*) Lord Frazer of Tullybelton ( for it was he) was bellyaching ( pun intended ) that rules are usually named after Judges ( him actually)
and they should be therefore Frazza rules

met with a certain amount of disbelief TBH
I know a lot of young people who say they won't have it.
saying not and doing not have a pretty low correlation
Question Author
It's a difficult one really as I was thinking if the child wants it but the parents don't want them too, then they won't be able to have it.
I don't know what Gillick competent means.
Gillick competent = capacity to self consent.

All covered in the Q&A section of the link above.

Thanks Mamya. Just have to hope my 15 yr old Granddaughter has more sense than her mother, (my daughter)
At long last our school is doing them on 5 November. Our son can’t wait and neither can we.
Any parent whose child defies their lack of consent should IMO hang their head in shame. Especially those who’ve had the vaccine themselves.
As for the anti-vaxxer school picketers: I have wondered what my reaction would be if I encountered one.
You’ll gather I feel strongly about this …
Question Author
So do I feel strongly about it, but no matter how I try, I cannot persuade one of my daughters and her hubby to have the vaccine.
I have told her though that I won't see her unless she gets the jab, even at Christmas.
I don’t understand that attitude I must say.
Some people seem to have a mental block about it. I’m not party to the whys and wherefores generally. I suppose you have to respect people’s fears. The people I really detest are those who go out of their way to discourage or even threaten others.
I meant i don’t understand the non-vaxxers in general
Question Author
My daughter doesn't tell others not to have it, she just won't have it herself. It can't be a fear of needles because she's never had a problem before, so I think it's the fear of what the vaccine can do as in reading of people who have had blood clots, strokes etc.
barsel you have set up a tricky ultimatum there - if she never has it, are you never going to see her again?
Question Author
I don't know at the moment, as I am classed as 'at increased risk of complications from COVID - 19' and because I'm approaching my 75th birthday, I am really worried about getting it.
My other 2 daughters have had their jabs but my middle daughter won't, and I don't know what it would take for her to change her mind.
I didn't see her all the time I was shielding, so I'm looking at it like that, that I will see her again (hopefully) at some point in the near future.

That’s such a shame. I’m sure what doesn’t help is that it’s in the news all the time. So any fatality etc gets a lot of publicity. I’d be interested to see the stats for the flu virus for example: there’s a rare condition caused by it (can’t remember the name) which I’m sure affects more people statistically
Flu vaccine I meant
Of course it should borne in mind that being vaccinated doesn’t stop you carrying the virus, although as far as I know risks are less great
Question Author
I've tried telling her there are a lot more people that die from not having the vaccine, but it's been a waste of time so far.
