Ivf On The Nhs - I Dont Understand How This Is Discriminatory

i read this story and found it very difficult to understand why these women say the policy is discriminatory, or why thier solicitors have taken th case on.
you either have to have been trying to get pregnant having unprotected sex for 2 years or have tried 12 rounds of insemination before being eligible on the NHS
This is no different between women in couples with men, single women, or lesbian couples. So in my mind it is not discriminatory.
I get very annoyed and the amount of money the NHS will have to pay for this judicial review. The NHS is on it's knees, and will offer the procedure if they fulfil the criteria whatever their orientation.
it wouldnt surprise me if the policy was altered to the detriment of ALL following this case), giving this couple the equality they want, meaning everyone can't get the procedue any more

Bednobs, I haven't read your link - but the article in the Times today said that same-sex couples have to have tried 12 rounds of insemination whereas heterosexual couples are required only to have tried to conceive for two years.

but single heterosexual women who cannot/are not fulfilling the 2 year criteria are also treated the same, so they are not being discriminated against because of their sexuality

I read the twelve cycles of artificial insemination can cost up to £30,000 so that is a cost a heterosexual couple would not have to spend during two year of unprotected sex.

no, they are married. I cant see how they can argue that they are being discriminated against because they are lesbians, if indeed that's what they are saying (i haven't read the judicial review papers)

The options in your second paragraph aren't applied equally. Group A, heterosexual couples only have to have been trying for two years, Group B ( same sex-couples and single women) have to have tried 12 rounds of insemination. Surely all the people in Group B feel they have additional hurdles?

yes, but thats my point really. they can claim its discriminatory for Bs, but they cant claim its discriminatory for lesbians

A male-female couple does not need to have the twelve rounds of artificial insemination but a female-female couple does, so how is that equality?

Thanks, Bednobs. My take on it is that they can't claim it's discriminatory ONLY against same-sex couples, but it's definitely not the same for anyone who isn't part of a hetero-sexual couple.

If you say ithey can claim its discriminatory for those in Group B, it must be discriminatory for lesbians since they are in that group.

The fact that single females are also in that group does not preclude discrimination against lesbians.

I think that the NHS has enough financial problems without having to pay for IVF.

Maybe limiting it to people who need medical interventions due to genetic issues.

I admit that I am not maternal and wouldn't wish any child to have me as a mother.

It can be done privately.
