Well one of my locals was "The Black Dog" - same difference?
one of my locals is 'the black boy', suppose that will have to change eventually :-(
One of my local pubs was called The Labour In Vain and its original sign was a cartoon of a stour white woman bathing a black child in a tub with suds everywhere.

The name remained, but the sign was changed to a farmer trying to chase birds off his newly sewn crop field.
It's closed now but we had the "All Labour in Vain" whose pub sign was several white ladies scrubbing a black child in a washtub!
looks like andy hughes and davebro could have been fellow drinkers
I find pub names quite fascinating - is there a book about them?
Golden Cross
Shoulder of Mutton
Tinker & Budget
The Blockade
were some I used to frequent.
the word black is now inextricably linked to race, therefore anything referred to using the adjective "black" must automatically be racist, even though the black object being described happens to be a duck, or a dog, or a rabbit...... or anything.
Don't you think the 'Beech' part of the name was contentious not the black bit? There are plenty of pubs with Black in the title.
Obviously the issue is with the second part of the pub's name, mushroom, else they wouldn't be intending to change it to The Black Hound.
Plenty of Black Swans up and down the land.
Davebro, plenty of books on the topic.

Good stocking fillers.

The history of the name is in the article. Even Answerbank allows *** when referring to female dogs.

As an aside, Linlithgow is where Montgomery Scott will be born, eventually.

near where my grandparents used to live is a pub called "The Case Is Altered".

i've yet to hear a convincing explanation for that one.
After he retired from hanging people, Albert Pierrepoint rang a pub called "Help the Poor Struggler" in Oldham.
