you don't need godparents at a Christening. If you do know someone who would make a good godparent but they can't be there you can ask someone (anyone) to stand in for them to take the vows on their behalf. I did this because one of my son's Godmother's couldn't get to us and my mum stepped in as a proxy. Just speak to the vicar, i'm sure he/she'll be able to help
Yes, I think you will find you do need a godparent, why not ask one of the grandparents to do it if you have'nt got an appropriate friend.
No you don't, it's really only symbolic anyway.I didn't think it necessary so had my son christened in a United Reform church where the whole congregation took part. Better check but I imagine it may apply to strict Anglican demoninations so go for a Free Church.
my son was Christened in a high Anglican church and there weren't any probs. I think it may be a bit like marrying divorcees tho, it's pretty much up to the vicar. I was straightforward with the vicar - I'm a single parent, with a godparent who can't be here etc and he had absolutely no problem with it at all. Good look bkennett

you know, the concepts of Godparents is not just to be at the ceremony, the point is that you are designating someone who can and will assist you with the religious upbringing of the child.

The Role of Godparents

What it is to be a Godparent

 is a privilege
 is a sacred responsibility
is participating and sharing in your new godchilds Christian life and education.
is sharing in the parental responsibility of bringing the child up in the Christian faith and "to keep Gods commandments as Christ taught us" Rite of Baptism

What it is NOT to be a Godparent

is not connected with civil guardianship or future care of the child
is not a reward for past deeds
is not something to be taken lightly

Why get your son baptised anyway. My mum is very religeous and I felt forced into religion from a young age. I decided to let my two sons wait until they were old enough to make the decision themselves if they want to be baptised or not - neither of them are baptised and leading happy fulfilled lives.Do not push your children into the religion of your choosing - their beliefs may not be the same as yours.

If you are not that religeous then why have them christened at all - again let them decide for themselves when they are able.

I did the same tubeway ... let my children decide when they were old enough.
