Have you tried valerian, emily1890? Some people swear by it.
There's also montmorency cherries, which give me an extra hour than the normal 4 hours that I get.
From when I was a child and well into my teens, I always used to sleep for 3.5 hours.
I thought it was normal, till a friend said that if she didn't get the full 8 hours, she was exhausted and groggy. (me staring at her, open-mouthed in utter amazement as she spoke).
As long as you don't suffer from depression, melatonin is rated highly by many insomniacs.
Unfortunately I didn't learn this useful piece of info till I'd bought some to try.
Being bipolar 2, I gave them to an insomniac friend of mine and she was very pleased indeed!
Hope you get some sleep soon emily, or your physical health is going to suffer. Your immune system will take a battering.
I take echinacea for my immune system - but I'm not suggesting that you buy all these products.
I did a huge amount of research on each of the supplements before I ventured, so why was the depression/melatonin info not available except on the bottle's label?
Typical!
Are you telling us you haven't slept a wink for 3 weeks?
Lay as close as you can to the edge of the bed and you'll soon drop off

Hehe
Know all about it. Wandering all night. Then I had hot milk about 5 slept until 9 am
Been there, done that, back in my student days. I went for weeks without sleep but then I went to see my GP. He gave me some diazepam, telling me that the dose was two tablets but to just try one on its own first. I took one before I went to bed. I slept solidly for 46 hours, annoyingly from Friday evening until Sunday evening, so I missed the weekend! Worryingly too, none of my friends had even noticed that I was missing!

See your GP (or, these days, contact him/her online) about your problem.
/////so my current bout of insomnia has lasted 3 weeks- no sleep, no rest, not even a lie down////

I find that statement difficult to believe.
IMV you cannot not sleep for 3 weeks - impossible!
Have you been prescribed any medication for your insomnia?
///////feel fine but know it isn't good for my body, but it's difficult since I'm not feeling tired//////

Even more difficult to believe.
I would have thought after a lot less than that you would develop sleep deprivation psychosis. I suspect what is happening you are ' micronapping' where you switch into sleep for very brief periods and are not registering them. You will however be lacking in dreaming sleep.
I also suffer from insomnia but the longest i have ever gone without sleep is about 4 days. And then i was starting to hear voices.

>>> I find that statement difficult to believe

I don't because I've been through it myself. However, up until recently, I've never needed much sleep. In my early twenties I made it a rule to go to bed for 3 hours on a Tuesday night, 3 hours on a Thursday night and 4 hours on a Sunday night, potentially allowing me 10 hours of sleep per week. However I probably slept for well under half the time that I was actually in bed.

//////no sleep, no rest, not even a lie down//////

C'mon now, that statement doesnt relate in any way to your experience.
Are you sure you are nor 'nodding off' several times during the day - almost unnoticeable micro sleeps, consciously done, they are called 'power sleeps'
I thought I had insomnia - then realised it was just a dream!
