Just listening to local radio and they have the chairman of the National Fish Fryers Association on at the moment. He is actually saying that the price of a portion of fish 'n' chips could soon rise to as much as a tenner!
He gives the reasons as "a knock-on from the pandemic, the rise in the price of fuel to run the fishing boats and the rise in VAT". He also warns that many 'chippies' will be lost.
I remember a time when a chippy tea was considered a cheap (and cheerful) Friday tea. Can't recall the last time i actually bought fish 'n' chips, but i do know that it will be a long, long time before i do so again.
A tenner!!
I eat a lot of fresh fish, cod and haddock are not cheap. I only go to a chip shop when I’m at the seaside because eating fish and chips on the prom is compulsory or when I visit living museums such as Beamish or the BCLM. They fry the food in dripping and it is irresistible.
The price increase won’t put me off
Wouldn't dream of buying fish from a chippy, especially when 1/3 of it is batter.
Aldi smoked Haddock £2.89 (230g) Cod (250g) £3.19, no batter. Both packs more than enough for one, takes about 10 mins to cook. Frozen oven chips around £2/2.50 for 1.5kls. All in all your just paying for the running of the chip shop, staff, lighting, gas, rent, oil, batter. The only way to make money is to give you less fish and chips at a higher cost. No thanks.
Your right there dave the portions of chips now are madness. I looked in one chippy the other day, 3 different prices for chips ranging from £1.75 upwards. Over the last 2 years and even with covid potatoes have not gone up or down, stayed about the same, also the fish in Aldi, no increase. There's was a bit of a shortage on and off during lock down regarding the fish, but still available. Fish shops have got very greedy in my view and have shot themselves in the foot.
I only get a fishcake (real plentiful fish) butty these days always asked if I want extra chips (Free) all for a whopping £3.00. I only go about every two months or so.
