Apparently this just follows protocol, though it may sound harsh. Contracts specifically state that the posts come with a condition that, with a change in the status of the then Prince Charles, the working contracts end. Every employee is aware of this and have been consulted over time. Some are to choose to retire, some will take voluntary redundancy and others will be moved to other roles with the Royal estate. My only thought is that this would have been better been made public after the Queen's funeral though I suspect it may be the case that an employee has spoken to the media.

I saw a lengthy interview on BBC earlier with a former butler. He said pretty much what Paigntonian has said...it was expected.

Does seem a bit crass informing them before the Queen has even been laid to rest. Still, most would have known this would occur on Charles' accession to the throne.

May be a bit premature, Charles has apparently not yet decided whether keep Clarence House as his home. Like the Queen who lived at Windsor and used Buckingham Palace as her place of work.
Probably wouldn't be very pleasant living there with all the renovation work going on after which he reportedly wants to open it more to the public.

But they don't have to lump it do they. They don't have to take on a job with that explicit condition. They could go and flip burgers at McDonalds or they could train to be a brain surgeon. I guess a job in the Royal Household suits most of them, even with such harsh conditions of employment..

This mass sacking was discussed somewhere last night but I can't find it at the moment. What I wondered then was why the redundancies were needed. In effect (putting it very broadly) Charles would take over his mother's staff and William would take over Charles's, and there shouldn't be any need to lose anyone. Is someone genuinely trying to reduce staffing levels?

Charles is still going to need someone to squeeze his toothpaste and iron his shoelaces. But handing out pink slips before the funeral's even been held isn't going to do much for any appearance of being a caring, sharing monarch that he might like to present

Surely as it was expected the staff would want formal notice as soon as possible. The letters did state that redeployment may be an option for some, they have a right to know exactly where they stand employment wise so they can make plans.

I suppose it always has happened. I suspect that the majority of them, who already understand the requirements of serving the Royal Family, will find other jobs easily and many will be re-absorbed into other posts as they become available.
