I've suffered with gout for many years. I've taken Allopurinol and it has controlled it very well. However my toe started to feel warm yesterday and today it is very sore and slightly swollen. Has any gout sufferer on ab found that Allopurinol starts to stop helping or do you think it's just a blip?

I'd say it's a blip. Dosage sometimes is not enough if you overdo it on purines.

Ah that could be it TTT. I forgot all about that. I enjoyed a hearty meal of liver and onions a couple of days ago for the first time in ages so that was probably the trigger.
mate, offal is out! you're lucky you just got a twinge!

Yes I know, haven't touched the stuff in years. I was just so tempted and never thought about my gout.
Lesson learned!!!
I agree with the post of TTT.........Alloprinol is no guarantee of further attacks of gout, but it certainly reduces them.

True Squad. I remember going to the doctors about a year after being diagnosed and telling him I was getting quite a strong twinge even though I had never missed taking the pills. He just smiled and said "small price to pay".
I used to still get occasional twinges despite being on allupurinol, so the GP just raised the dosage; problem solved. She sad it was pretty low on side-effeects, and I haven't had any.
GP'is the UK will take a blood uric acid level of anything below 7mgms/dl as normal.
However in the U.S patients with gout are instructed to keep their uric acid levels to below 5mgm/dl.

I have had a fight with my GP's to increase my dose to enable a blood uric acid of less than 5mgm/dl and at last I have won.

What is your uric acid levels ILA?

I honestly don't know. I was told when first diagnosed but that was long ago. I go for my annual health check (the last one was last week) and they take blood and urine and told me they were pleased with the results but said no more.
OK ILA.
Been taking it 10 years with no side effects I think once or twice I have had your symptoms but they soon passed.
