My near 4-year-old Cox's apple tree (sapling planted 17 February 2019), bore some fruit in years 2 (18 fruit), and 3 (25 fruit - this season). The first fruiting was all good; the second, disastrous! Only about 6 apples edible*.

Tree First pruned lightly in January 2022.

I am told by some pundit that the Coddling Moth larvae are the culprits; boring into the apple's flesh, they cause a spreading rot that renders the apple inedible.

Is this true? If so, what is the remedy? If not true, what might be the cause/remedy?

*Numbers of fruit had bird-bites, but I haven't taken them into account for this synopsis.

Many thanks.

I had haradly any apples this year - lots fo spring blossom but the summer heat wiped them all out.
I have some codling moth damage but the affected apples don't go rotten, maybe it's something else.
// Only about 6 apples edible* //

This happened to our tree last year. However it was badly plagued with woolly aphid. Plus the tree is well established, being over 25 years old.

Thankfully this year's yield has been far more fruitful - approx 80 Apples with about 20 still remaining on the tree.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Somebody suggested it could be Sawfly - would that (they?) cause the extensive rot within each affected apple?
