I need to make a clear break between drinking and sobriety and a period of time in a clinic might provide that.

Sandy, Firstly, without wanting to sound patronising, well done in making the first step. It seems 'steep' but must be quite a good clinic for that price. Do they do 'aftercare' within that price i.e. is there a back up for if you 'wobble'?
How long?
I thoroughly applaud your determination to get sober - v diff as you say you are alone
Good Luck

It MUST include counselling as well

It's five weeks. First clinic I've seen when I googled rehab.
My guess is you'd be directed to AA after you'd left their care, though I don't know.
I'm an old man, mid 70s, and I've come to be tired of my life. In the last year, or so, my drinking has quadrupled.
If you have the money and the determination it is a bargain. Can you visit before committing?
You should expect a full health check and assessment before paying, and a full breakdown of what is included in the price. A clear explanation of the programme and any ongoing support is vital.
Sandy, can you check out reviews of the clinic before you decide? Have you asked your counsellor if he/she could recommend somewhere? If you can afford it, go for it. As you say, you're mid 70's so spend your money on something that will help you instead of leaving it for others to spend. Good luck with whatever you decide.
My heart goes out to you, Sandy. I wish you well. x
What you’re doing takes great strength of character. Well done. But perhaps you could think about speaking to your GP before choosing a clinic? He may be able to recommend one he knows is reputable. I would hate to see you ripped off.
I hear that the well-known "celeb" rehab clinics like The Priory are very good:

Does it address the reason you fell into alcoholism in the first place. Such a component is essential I would think.
I applaud you Sandy for your determination to get dry.
You will get there.
As others have said there may be other facilities available to you, check them out ‘ gp’ .
But what price your health ? Good luck .
Sandy go for it if you have the money , keep thinking positive ..Good Luck, you can do it.
Personally, sandy, and no, I don't know you that well. However, I do get the impression that any bind to alcohol is a symptom, not the root cause. Me thinks somewhere that offers residential counselling may be a better answer.....and, anyway, alcohol access will probably not be allowed.
sorry to be so blunt...!
May I ask how much you spend on alcohol in a month, Sandy. None of my business, I know, but it might be an indication of the worth of paying for rehab.
Think carefully. What will you be doing after 5 weeks of rehab? Will be returning to same routine and circumstances?
That will be grounds for relapsing.
Aftercare and a reliable one is imperative.
What services are available to you? How helpful is your gp?
I wish you well. x
Has your GP spoken to you about any NHS in-patient units in your area where you would receive treatment - just a thought as I think £8000 is excessive.
I suppose a clear break between drinking and sobriety would work if you don't know why you drink. If you have an inkling as to why you drink then maybe it's not worth paying that much to find out what you already know? Just my thought. Maybe you need the tools to stop you drinking and if you suffer from depression then maybe a visit to the GP could be a good first step. There is a programme on iplayer about AA which might be interesting for you.
I’d go see your GP, Sandy and tell him what you’re thinking of doing. He may know better ( cheaper) places to go. Please continue to keep us informed of your decisions, we’re always here.
