Hi there. I am 51 and having my first prostate exam tomorrow. I had a phone appointment with GP. I explained I am having problems with low flow, taking a bit longer and every time after I go I get pain in my groin. So they said to come in for a prostate exam and a stomach exam to see if I am retaining urine would I not know if I was retaining urine? Anyone had a prostate exam and what's it like ? Any tips?

Make sure you give your bottom a good wash!
Only going by what I've been told.

Obviously aimed at those with disability but what it says applies to anyone.
The actual digital examination, while not exactly pleasant, only takes a few seconds.
My recent one (my first) was carried out by a female GP (not the attractive young one with the Scottish accent who I had once met before). She was a mature Indian lady and we got on very well. I wasn't even sure that she was going to examine me or whether or not she would need another person to be present as a chaperone, until after a friendly chat about symptoms she casually pulled on a rubber glove and squeezed something out of a tube onto her hand. Very down-to-earth and practical no-nonsense. We chuckled about embarrassment afterwards and she said that such examinations were worse for women than for men.
I can thoroughly recommend it, especially when they tell you that your P is smooth and healthy, although possibly a bit big. Mind you, apparently 70% of men of my age have a big one, so nothing to worry about.
I had previously filled in an IPSS form which suggested that my symptoms were nothing to worry much about. She was nearly as good as sqad.
The prostate examination I had in hospital (when I'd been admitted after not peeing at all for 11 days) was nothing more than a doctor sticking a couple of fingers up my backside for a quick feel around. It's not exactly the most pleasant of examinations but, in the wider scheme of things, it's 'no big deal' really.

Later on I had a urine flow test at the hospital, where I simply had to pee into a special bucket that measured the rate of flow. That was then followed by an ultrasound examination (which is basically the same quick, totally painless procedure that pregnant women have to check up on their babies' health), to check to see if I was retaining any urine after peeing.

My guess is that (as your GP's surgery probably isn't equipped with the 'measuring bucket' that I peed into), your doctor will ask that use the loo before examining you. He/she will poke his/her fingers up your posterior and then get you to lie down so that the ultrasound procedure can be carried out.

It might not be very dignified but it's nothing to worry about ;-)
Just make sure your doc doesn't have hands on both your shoulders as he performs the examination.
geordie......no big deal, bit uncomfortable but all it will tell is if the gland is enlarged or not.
If enlarged you will be referred to a Urologist if normal size, then you probably won't.

gordie, just to wish you well for tomorrow. I am pleased you are getting checked over. :)

Some great answers made me smile thanks. I will let you know how I get on
Close you eyes, think of England and keep breathing.

It feels odd rather than discomfort, try not to make any funny remarks out of embarrassment like I did.
