Has anyone noticed their distance vision actually improving as they've got older? I've had the same contact lenses for over 10 years (eye exam is booked!) and I feel that one in particular is now too strong. I was watching a cricket match the other day, happened to have my reading glasses with me, put them on and I could see the play and scoreboard more clearly. That shouldn't be, should it?

I remember my dad when in his seventies saying that he thought his eyesight had got better and he didn't need his distance glasses as much.

It's a phenomenon called 'second sight'. Regrettably, it's only temporary and is actually a warning of worsening sight ahead. (Sorry!)

Thanks, had already read that. All seems a bit strange - will be interesting to see what my prescription is now
Since I had both my cataracts done, my sight has gradually got worse.
Don't know why that should be.
I just used to use my distance glasses for driving, but now I need them for things like the TV and the computer.
I don't know if its true, but I can tell you my mil stopped using glasses well into her 80s, and no she didn't wear contacts!
Aged 79, my eyesight hasn't improved, but it has stayed the same for the last five years. Given the cost of varifocal lens, that's a godsend for me!

You're obviously going to the wrong place, Grumpgrandad! I paid £45 for my specs, including frames, varifocal lenses, anti-glare coating and anti-scratch coating. (I could have had a tint as well, if I'd wanted).

Thanks very much for that info Buenchico. My yearly eye test is due later this month, so I think a visit to Asda is on the cards. I would never have have thought of them, despite them delivering our weekly grocery order!
It's not uncommon, the optician told me when I experienced it.

Just to update this.
Yes, my distance vision has improved in the 13 years since my last sight test, and the new contact lenses are both 1.5 dioptres less strong than those I was prescribed in 2010. The difference in the new ones is amazing, and I had a really good experience at Specsavers, too.
