Masks have been shown to have negligible effects in preventing transmission and infection. They simply cannot work against a virus. How could they? A typical virus is around 80–100 nm. Surgical facemasks are not sealed to the face and hence have innumerable gaps through which a virus can easily get through. They’re about as effective in stopping viruses as a fishing net would be in stopping a swarm of gnats.
