Frail memory from 70 years ago tells me that parts of the body are numbered from the heart outwards. So if if you lost a finger 'above the second joint', which joint is that? Does that mean that just the fingertip has gone, or most of it?

The names are agreed by conference - and go around as nomina anatomica ( say it quickly, nomina-tomina)
they went frooa Latin phase - articulatio coxae for 'hip' now it is mixed. inner and outer ( 1930s ) is medial and lateral - referred ot the body axis.
