A friend was told by the optician that he has cataracts which will stop him driving before long. He asked what the procedure is and was told that, under local anaesthetic, the surgeon 'cuts the eye, removes the lens and replaces it with a fake one'. Is that right?

He's terrified.... so, does it hurt, and is it possible to request a general anaesthetic?

It's almost exactly a year since my second eye was done, the first one was done about 2 months before that. The procedure is painless. I had drops in the eye about 15 minutes before the operation and the procedure was explained to me. I was taken into the operating room and a protective mask placed over my face and then the eye clamped open - a little uncomfortable...

Retro - yet another point I forgot to mention - they use a laser to cut your eye to insert the new lens, not a scalpel. Same effect but it doesn't seem as cringeworthy.

I know that but folk are used to their eyes being that way and as you say, the brain adapts.

I would have thought that suddenly having new lenses, one long and one short would be difficult to adapt to.

If you've ever had to wear an eye patch you know how quickly your brain adapts.

Not everyone is suitable for two different lenses, though, for various reasons

I have worn a patch but deliberately combining the same two images, one in focus and clear, the other, way out of focus and blurry would not be ideal.

My husband had one eye done in November and is due to have the other done next week. Believe me he is the biggest scaredy-cat and was terrified but he felt no pain and is not at all worried about the next op. He was driving again within 3 days.
