Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Cataracts

Which of these is the most serious condition?

I would think Macular degeneration. Glaucoma and Cataracts are treatable fairly easily if done promptly. Sadly if you need prompt I am talking privately. I have had double cataract ops and they are both brilliant.

not much to treat in Age related macular degeneration - glaucoma is treatable but really has to be tested for, and cataracts you know 0 ( walk into things etc).

I have an appointment tomorrow at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and I was going to ask an expert for you, but if the reason is 'because I want to know' I won't bother. I thought you must have a serious reason for wanting to know.

they all lead to blindess

one is untreatable - does that make it serious or not

one is treatable but has to be tested for, and doesnt regress

and the third ( catatacts) is treatable and easily diagnosed

I mean which is worse

Measles, HIV or syphilis?

Cataracts are easy (had both mine removed).  Glaucoma is more serious, but my incipient glaucoma is held in check with eye-drops.NHS

Macular degeneration is another story.  It is far more serious and they are only just finding some answers for it.

Seeing as you are so insistent, Barsel, I have all three.  The cataracts are not bad enough to be removed, the macular degeneration is not the type that can be treated although I take supplements that may or may not help.

I have three different eye drops twice a day for the glaucoma and if there is no improvement in two months I will have laser surgery.

I have only ever had sight in one eye.

So which should I be more concerned about?

I've had both my cataracts done, and a year ago was told I have macular degeneration. I take Lutein for this.

When I went for an eye test this year, the optician could see something behind my left eye so I'm at the hospital tomorrow to see if they know what it is.

I would have thought cataracts were the least serious because you can have them done, but I don't know of any operation you can have for the other 2.

I see the consultant every 3 months for the glaucoma but he won't comment about the MD except to say the lutein that I buy will do no harm. I get the impression he is somewhat sceptical about the efficacy of them.

I was just wondering which will get me first.  Cataract surgery is not advisable until absolutely neccessary as I also have Fuch's Dystrophy

Oh dear. That sounds nasty. I've been waiting for yonks for a cataract op. I can only assume it's the lesser of the three evils or else there is a big waiting list.I need mine done as I'm worried it may affect my shooting this season.

Barry, I get these with Bilberries. They are a bit pricey though. I'm sure they were 3 for 2 last time I bought them.

Perhaps they might be cheaper elsewhere.

When I was at Specsavers, they showed me the MD in my eyes on the screen. 

I haven't heard of Fuchs Dystrophy. Ain't no fun when you have problems with your eyes.

I'm worried about what I'm going to find out this afternoon.

I paid Retro. When they were diagnosed I weas told there was a 7 month wait for consultancy( or threreabouts) and then if the consultant decided it was worth doing a further waiting list of more than 18months at least. When I asked about private   ... I could have a consultancy within 7 days and the op done in one within 3 weeks of that. I opted for that and paid £300 up front for a consultancy then £1400, again up front, for the op in one eye. It was done and dusted within 4 weeks. It was all done during the week, on NHS premises, by staff who worked for the NHS and were doing NHS operation at the same time. (they were doing them in batches of about a dozen a day in 3 little theatres) The tea and sanwiches that were handed out afterwards were equally woeful for both sets of patients. I should have been fed Lobster or Fillet steak for that price. It is now something like 30% more to go private I believe. Disgracefull state of affairs. Meanwhile the tv ads plead for funds to treat cataracts for "villages" in Africa and assert that they can be done for thousands of sufferers for as little as a few pounds from me. Eyy?. How come I paid the thick end of nearly £2k to have one done here in the UK? I should have got a dinghy to Africa.
