Does anyone follow astronomy/space?

No one I know seems that interested in astronauts going to space etc. I find it fascinating but people do have mixed views.

I guess it would be good to ask do you agree with space exploration? Or do you think the money should be sent on real life problems on earth first?

Yes 100% problems on earth get sorted because of discoveries due to space exploration.

//real life problems on earth//

We are, and always will be, affected by events in what we call space, and although we have been very fortunate not to have witnessed some of the catastrophic "problems" that have occured on Earth due to such activity, it is a stone cold certainty that eventually there will be similar. The better able we are, as a species, to interact with a space environment and survive by understand what is possible the safer we will all collectively be. A major spin off resulting from this research and endeaver is the stunning technical advances that we are making. It is like a global insurance policy to safeguard the future of mankind. I am in thrall, and always have been, to  the stunning achievements of the whole space industry. Of course we will always have people who think the money would be better spent at Dominoes or KFC. Ignore them they do not know best.

Well I for one love my Teflon pan. Spinoff from the Apollo missions.

One day we'll all get along and go on five year missions, have food appear from nowhere, do away with money, religion and racism and wear space-wigs and galactic corsets.

We will, of course, need to hang on to weapons of mass destruction though. Photon torpedos, full spread!

i don't follow it but it is a worthwhile way to use our resources. every useless probe ever made is still better than a war.

Space exploration is vital. A species that doesn't explore and expand stagnates and eventually dies out.

Why do folk put things as either/or questions when they are clearly parallel issues ?

My mind is boggled, OG, where did you get your information?

OG, "Why do folk put things as either/or questions when they are clearly parallel issues ?"

You mean questions like the one you posted earlier to-day, titled, "Uk Military News, Posted For Discussion/Views"...?

OG; We won't expand for many (perhaps thousands of) years.

1 We won't find it easy to overcome the damage to human bodies in a space environment.

2 We won't find it easy to convert lumps of space rock into habitable environments - we can't even look after our own planet.

We need more finance for tin foil hats, to be honest

The UK military thing is a different issue and not really related to either/or. It isn't a choice between NATO and giving control to the EU.

We won't expand at all if we are always putting off taking the necessary first steps. There will always be issues we would like solved wherever we are.

OG, I was referring to your use of  "Discussion/Views" but this is getting off the topic.

That simply allows the reader to do either or both; state a view or participate in a discussion. Fair enough I reckon.

OG. There's plenty of time before we need to leave the planet - lots to do before that option is realisable. The state of the world now is not going to be solved in the time it takes to organise a mass emigration to another world.

The state of the world is not going to be solved. There's always something.

It's a good job our species did not stay in their villages or caves trying to make their local area perfect before checking out the rest of the globe. We'd still all be there now.

It's definitely worthwhile doing. Some amazing stuff has been discovered by the various probes we've sent out.

What I do find pointless is the Musk and Bezos type vanity projects. Anyone that thinks we're going to establish colonies anywhere is deluded. Compared to this planet everywhere we will ever be able to reach is an absolute hellhole.

Well we`ve managed to screw this world up so much we need another location to move to in the future.

//Well we`ve managed to screw this world up so much we need another location to move to in the future.//

Mars or the moon are the only places we have a chance to set up some kind of limited domicile on.

Neither is very appealing. Any billionaire that managed to get there would be pining for the luxuries of planet earth within a month.

Il faut cultiver notre jardin.  ( We must cultivate our garden)  Voltaire.

Roughly meaning; Once we've got our own garden sorted, then we may move on.

But getting our own gardens sorted could take longer than we first thought.
