Summary:
For the vast majority of employment applications (and volunteer roles), the ONLY check that an employer (or voluntary organisation) can ask for is a 'Basic' one. It shows ONLY unspent convictions (and unspent conditional cautions) and absolutely nothing else.
The higher levels of DBS checks ONLY apply to certain more 'sensitive' roles, such as working as a security guard or alongside children (or vulnerable adults). They can't be used for 'everyday' jobs at all.

recruiting someone to work with children or join the police or prison service may require a fuller check than say a local football referee or a college groundsman
nope - footie ref wd work with children and so wd a groundsman
so a DBS barring decision is an absolute disaster for you ( they tell you they are gonna do it and give you a chance to reply) and should be resisted with the aid of citizens advice.
This wasnt a problem with paper records ( they can be lost) but is a real problem with computers that data ( accurate or not) never seems to go away
