Answered earlier in the week (not by me) - Frit. Fruit, apples say, and cored = remove the centre letter.

A frit is a small fly? I thought it was a slightly archaic term for frightened or cowardly. I did search before I asked the question but did not find this one.

Chaseman, I too hadn't known Frit/fly - but Chambers enlightened me, ' a small fly destructive to wheat and other cereal crops'.
