When You See Your Gp.
Does he/she actually decide anything that you couldn't have determined was necessary yourself?
I went to my GP with a problem this morning. After a brief examination he said "I'll refer you for a scan & prescribe some antibiotics as a precaution." I coulda told him that!!!!!!!!!!

Then why do you bother going? One of these days you might be grateful for professional advice. AB is full of people who know everything better than the so-called experts or professionals.
On a practical note, I don't think you can just walk into a hospital and demand a scan; as for antibiotics, they are over-used and should be prescribed by doctors, not by self or blokes in the pub or online.

And that's one of the biggest problems currently facing the NHS which nobody will tackle. They are largely surplus to requirements, but almost nothing can be done without seeing one and most patients have extreme difficulty doing that.
So what do they do? They go to A&E of course. They don't need to go there but they oftten have no alternative.
The NHS needs to move away from having "gattekeepers" to their services and develop a system where patients can self refer for joints/guts/bowels whattever is troubling them. But that won't be done.
GPs are merely part of the process of keeping citizens away from hospitals by referring, getting appointments allocated then cancelling a couple of days before the appointed time leading to a follow up appointment some time in the future.
Unless you're a jakey, junkie or just fell off a small boat of course, then heaven and Earth will be moved.
Best of normal people just succumb to their ailments to make it simpler.
