A friend of mine has a step-child (17) who has just caught an std.

This got me thinking that she caught it from a man, who got it from a woman etc How did these diseases originate?

Sorry to reveal this one, it's not particularly pleasant...but i heard HIV/Aids came from monkeys in Africa, i.e. someone must've done it with a monkey then other people. As for the others i don't know, probably just the same place as other diseases which can't be transmitted come from.
