I have to spend a lot of time in my car, often behind vehicles pushing out nasty petrol and diesel fumes. Does this put me at risk of getting respiratory problems in the future?

This, [respiratory..] is why cyclists in e.g. London tend to wear filter masks. Maybe car drivers should too. And pedestrians, dogs and horses. And why don't they produce and encourage a cheap alternative like electric scooters? Because it's not about cars it's about selling petrol.
Might help SLIGHTLY to keep your blowers closed when you are in stationary traffic but yes it is horrible and does cause irratation.
One of the first side effects to look out for is repeatedly asking the same questions....
