Java and Javascript enabling
2 Answers
How can I be sure that Java and Javascript is enabled on my computer? I use windows 98 SE and for many months have downloaded a Crosword puzzle from the Sydney Morning Herald successfully. Recently when i have clicked Quick Crossword i have been presented with a blank square with a tiny square icon in the top left-hand corner and no crossword. i understand that the system has to be enabled with Java and Javascript? I have endeavoured to do this but with no success to date . i have also tried other croswords with the same result. Can someone help solve my problem please.I am missing my regular crossword puzzles.i operate IE 6.
thanks John McG Canberra

If you've got a fresh install of Windows on your machine, you won't have Microsoft Virtual Machine, which is something to do with java aplets i believe. Usually when a website requires this, one of those "Install on demand" boxes will pop up, but unfortunately there has been an ongoing court case lately between Microsoft and some company over the Install on Demand Microsoft Virtual Machine. For the time being, Microsoft have stopped supporting the Virtual Machine for Install on Demand, at least until the court case is over i think. It's a pain i know, because some websites i used to order online from use java aplets when you enter your credit card details - forcing me to have to order from them via the telephone instead. I just get what you describe - a blank square with another small square (with a red X) in the top left. Hopefully, the dispute will be settled pretty soon and we'll be able to download the necessary plug in. (it might be already, i haven't checked Microsoft's site for some time)
