vacuum clearner recommendations: what do you use?

Hi there, y'all,

I know this question has been asked before in various different aspects, but wondered if I could have some uptotheminute makes and models?

I have a dyson cylinder, yellow and grey job at the moment (yay), but today it blew up after several months of minor things gradually copping out nearly 3 years to the day and outside of it's warranty (bad.)

I have a carpeted house, but may switch to hardwood floors in the medium future in some rooms, also I have a son with many chronic allergies, one of which is an acute allergy to dust, would you believe, and a dog, cat and 4 other children (the dog and cat are not allergens for him, just poor punctuation on my part, but the hair really gets on my wick)

I clearly need to purchase a new vacuum cleaner before we are knee deep in dust and fur, so, number one, what would you recommend and why.....(In a cilla black voice)

I had a single cyclone Dyson, swapped to one with more -mini- cyclones, much better! My housekeeper swears by the Miele cat and dog cleaner, I think she is knobbling the vac- she's very goal oriented. She is only five foot one and prefers the lighter pull around capabilities of the Miele.Our floors are wood, porcelain tile and one carpeted drawing room.(Three of us have long hair and I do have to get the scissors to the brush bar once a month.V. irritating!)

Got rid of my dyson and got a Miele cylinder (not the dog and cat one) which is EXCELLENT. It does carpets, hard floors, and is sooooooo much easier than the dyson. The dyson was very heavy to push around, a cylinder is much lighter as you are only moving the hose, it also goes under furniture without the need for attachments (great for under the futon), and personally, I couldn't stand seeing all my muck in the dyson, I prefer it hidden away!

We have SEBO Turbo upright (made on Germany).

We've tried several types of vac' cleaners over the years, but wouldn't use anything else now.

Oh, I fibbed, we also keep an Hitachi cylinder in the garage for cleaning the cars!

There has been quite a few questions about Dysons put up in the past some likes and dislikes.I had the yellow and grey one for 6 years before passing it on to my son and now I have the one now with attachment for dog and cat hairs.Never had any trouble with any of them except for the small 6"hose underneath which is easy to take off and replace about�5.I think if you clean them weekly and look after them they like all things will last.By the way my son still uses the one I gave him and I have had this one for 4 years.

All these vacuums say that they are scooping up all the germs and allergy bearing mites, but regardless of their filtration some must be chucked back into the atmosphere. Several years ago we got a central vacuum system installed and it's the greatest ever, both for use and no sucked in air is released back into the room. At the time it was installed it cost about �1100 and it was well worth it whenyou consider how quickly the normal ones are renewed. The other point it remains in the same position and nothing gets broken or bits falling off !

i agree with smudge, I have a SEBO, have had it for 4 years now and not a problem with it as yet (touch wood). I suffer from allergies and also had a dog till recently and the Sebo was recommended and i have not looked back, my dad has one too and also a friend got one on my recommendation.

If i had to go and buy another vacum cleaner i would def get a SEBO!

I had the yellow and grey dyson but then a badly moulting dog caused us to get the dc14 animal still a dyson but fantastic with getting rid of the hair,I reckon though that everyone is different,and all have their personal choices!

I don't believe it Iz66 - Of all the vac' cleaner threads I've read on AB, you are the first one (part from us) to own a SEBO!

Our eldest daughter has one too & neither of us would buy anything else now. Our youngest daughter uses a Henry cylinder, but often borrows mine for a good old turbo clean! (She doesn't know it yet, but father Christmas might even oblige one day)!

We bought ours from John Lewis, but you can shop around - Square Deal so them too.
