As you probably know, what causes gout is an excess of URIC acid in your system that the body cannot get rid of. So it stores it in the joints, The most convenient being the big toe. There it turns into crystals. Its the same effect as having sand in a universal joint. Not good. There is NOTHING more painful. As others commented here, a daily tablet of "Allopurinol" will help control it, and avoiding certain foods will help. Peas, Broccoli, strawberries, chocolate, and too much beer.. But be cautious of one thing. Gout is directly related to Chronic Lymphocytic leukemia, where the white blood cells are too high, In fighting the gout, the body produces even more white cells, overloading the spleen and other organs like the liver. This can be life threatening. Get a doctor to check it out thoroughly.
