There are a number of causes - but you do need to see your doctor. As a hearing aid audiologist - the Hearing aid Council require me to write to a persons GP to inform them of any patient who has pulsatile, unilateral or distressing tinnitus

I'm not sure if it's curable but I have mild tinnitus that started a couple of years ago. I have learned to live with it as it only really bothers me at night. I used to spend sleepness nights pacing up and down the house. I was convinced that our new neighbours next door had got some kind of appliance that made a loud, pulsating humming noise. I used to speculate what it could be. Did they have a huge freezer against the party wall? Or was it perhaps a huge fishtank or even some medical apparatus that they had to have running at night.

I used to have a terrible time getting to sleep some nights and was getting to the point of going to ask our neighbours what the noise was, and that it was bothering me. The penny finally dropped when I went to stay with friends who lived out in the country in a peaceful detatched house. The noise was still there!!
