This is the period of deep sleep when the mind sorts out the day's information, and assimilates it. the average adult takes two or three hours to sink into REM sleep, and about the same to come out of it again, so the 'shallow' sleep is not really needed.
Some adults - Margaret Thatcher is a well-known example, can go virtually straight into, and out of REM sleep, so they only need f - 5 hours a night to feel rested and refreshed.
Sadly, the amount you need is not something you can control, so if you need a little, or a lot, you should simply go along with your body's demands.
