Dreams are supposedly only experienced during relatively light sleep, not during very deep sleep, and so while mildly unconscious we experience dreams based on physical experience (present as well as past) and thoughts (including hopes, fear, fantasy, etc.).
I'm with Karl, sometimes if you sleep awkwardly you'll dream you're hurting and wake up hurting. For example, if you sleep on your shoulder you may well dream that you have injured your shoulder. The pain your body is feeling is transposed into your sleep.
BTW - for good sleep use earplugs especially if at uni with some bloody classical music lover who thinks just because she thinks it's good she can play it as loud as she wants at any time of the day or night. Seriously earplugs do help with sleep - but get a loud alarm!
